It has managed to create a global community and give birth to an entirely new industry of millions of enthusiasts who create, invest in, trade and use Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies in their everyday lives. The emergence of the first cryptocurrency has created a conceptual and technological basis that subsequently inspired the development of thousands of competing projects.

Almost. We have a process that we use to verify assets. Once verified, we create a coin description page like this. The world of crypto now contains many coins and tokens that we feel unable to verify. In those situations, our Dexscan product lists them automatically by taking on-chain data for newly created smart contracts. We do not cover every chain, but at the time of writing we track the top 70 crypto chains, which means that we list more than 97% of all tokens.
On 25 March 2014, the United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS) ruled that bitcoin will be treated as property for tax purposes. Therefore, virtual currencies are considered commodities subject to capital gains tax.
While you can invest in cryptocurrencies, they differ a great deal from traditional investments, like stocks. When you buy stock, you are buying a share of ownership of a company, which means you’re entitled to do things like vote on the direction of the company. If that company goes bankrupt, you also may receive some compensation once its creditors have been paid from its liquidated assets.
“There are additional options to invest in crypto indirectly. Recently, the SEC approved several spot bitcoin ETFs which you can purchase in a brokerage account,” says Rischall. “You can also invest in publicly traded stocks of companies related to crypto, such as major crypto exchanges, hardware manufacturers and service providers.”
After the early innovation of bitcoin in 2008 and the early network effect gained by bitcoin, tokens, cryptocurrencies, and other digital assets that were not bitcoin became collectively known during the 2010s as alternative cryptocurrencies, or “altcoins”. Sometimes the term “alt coins” was used, or disparagingly, “shitcoins”. Paul Vigna of The Wall Street Journal described altcoins in 2020 as “alternative versions of Bitcoin” given its role as the model protocol for cryptocurrency designers. A Polytechnic University of Catalonia thesis in 2021 used a broader description, including not only alternative versions of bitcoin but every cryptocurrency other than bitcoin. As of early 2020, there were more than 5,000 cryptocurrencies.

Cryptocurrency regulation
“Strong regulations are not only important, but necessary to foster the industry’s growth,” Sousa says. “From the investor’s standpoint, having access to this new asset class through regulated entities and investment funds helps mitigate the risks.”
In August 2023, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) announced a framework that would regulate stablecoin issues in the country, requiring any issuers to conform to specific criteria. Stablecoins must be approved by the MAS to be allowed to use the label “MAS-regulated stablecoin” to distinguish themselves from non-regulated stablecoins.
Second, the interlocutory appeal addresses a fundamental split in the Southern District of New York regarding whether and how Howey applies to secondary market transactions of digital assets. Judge Torres in Ripple Labs drew a distinction between Ripple’s institutional sales, which satisfied Howey, and programmatic sales (i.e., blind bid-ask transactions on exchanges), which did not. In contrast, Judge Rakoff in SEC v. Terraform Labs and Judge Failla in Coinbase declined to differentiate based on the manner of sale, finding that Howey could apply equally to secondary market transactions.16 The Second Circuit’s resolution of this split will have profound implications for all regulatory disputes relating to digital asset trading platforms, as the designation as a security triggers the application of the securities laws for all participants in the industry, including issuers, traders, and trading platforms.
Crypto ETFs are pooled investments that track crypto markets but are traded like shares on stock exchanges and are accessible through brokerage platforms. ETFs offer several benefits over other investments, such as debt-based exchange-traded products (ETPs) or investment trusts that were previously approved for cryptocurrencies. ETFs are regulated under the Investment Company Act of 1940, which provides more investor protection and transparency than ETPs or trusts. ETFs also offer greater liquidity since they can be easily bought and sold on stock exchanges throughout the day, and they often have lower fees than other investment products.
