Game 3 world series
Dodgers reliever Anthony Banda then took the mound and walked Anthony Rizzo on four pitches to put runners on first and second. Gleyber Torres was then called out on strikes after a final pitch from Banda that appeared to be well outside the zone. Torres was still shaking his head over home plate umpire Mark Carlson’s call while in the field in the eighth inning.
The Dodgers had runners on first and third with no outs in the fourth but didn’t score. The failed squeeze on the borderline call at home secured the first out. Yankees reliever Nestor Cortes then took over on the mound and struck out Shohei Ohtani and induced a lineout from Mookie Betts to end the inning.
Yankees: The Yankees are facing a 3-0 series deficit because their offense, led by their presumptive American League MVP, has gone missing. On Monday, New York produced four hits, five walks and boos from the home crowd. Giancarlo Stanton went 2-for-4; the rest of the team finished 3-for-27. Aaron Judge went 0-for-3 with a strikeout and a walk, running his series tally to 1-for-12 with seven strikeouts. Stanton’s double in the fourth inning Monday was New York’s only extra-base hit. The Yankees went 1-for-4 with runners in scoring position and left eight runners on base. They had rallies end with a questionable send (Stanton getting thrown out at home in the fourth inning) and a questionable strike three call (Gleyber Torres taking a pitch above the strike zone with two runners on base in the seventh inning). This is certain: The Yankees, who have managed to score seven runs in this series, are another quiet night away from getting swept. — Jorge Castillo
“We’re trying to get a game tomorrow. That’s where our focus lies,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said postgame. “Hopefully we can go be this amazing story and shock the world, but right now it’s about trying to get a lead, trying to grab a game and force another one and then on from there. J.T. Realmuto played the biggest hero for the Phillies, hitting the go-ahead home run in the top of the 10th inning and a two-run tying double earlier in the game. But it was a night of heroes for Philadelphia, including the five relief pitchers who combined to throw 5⅔ scoreless innings.
But there was Verlander back out there and Marsh doubled, Schwarber walked and J.T. Realmuto tied the game with a two-run double. These Phillies don’t quit, that’s for sure. In our predictions file heading into the series, I warned that Baker was likely to leave a starter in too long at some point — and we just saw it happen. A lot of baseball to go here, but a 5-0 blowout has surprisingly turned into a good game. — Schoenfield
The play was highly reminiscent of Kirk Gibson’s walk-off homer in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series against the Oakland A’s. In both cases, a slugger hobbled by an injury delivered a homer to win the game. Gibson’s still reverberates through Dodgers history, and this one will, too, if the Dodgers can get it done in the next few games.
There was plenty of drama before the grand slam as well. The Dodgers scored the first run, but the Yankees responded with a titanic homer from Giancarlo Stanton. Both starting pitchers, Gerrit Cole and Jack Flaherty, had good starts, but Flaherty came out in line for the loss.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen a team stay on the field for 20 minutes after a final play just to watch in awe and to soak in the fans,” said Blake Treinen after the game. “I mean that was the most incredible moment in baseball I’ve seen. I’ve been blessed to see a lot of things in my career, that’s now the top.”
